20 years since the launch of Facebook..
How much has changed over two decades?
Facebook, the world-changing social media giant
was 20 years old on 4 February.
In those two decades, Facebook's founder, Mark Zuckerberg
went from being an obsessed boy to a billionaire in Silicon Valley.
The product he created has witnessed an equally spectacular transformation.
Facebook was founded on 4 February 2004
at which time the site was intended to replace the real "Facebook"
which was a paper brochure depicting Harvard students and teachers.
But :
- compared to the recent version of the sit
- the site at its beginning may seem completely abstract
- as there was no news file, timeline or status updates
and only one photo per profile.
When Facebook was first launched, users needed an email address
harvard.edu to be able to register, although throughout 2004
it reached other universities as well, including Stanford, Oxford and Cambridge.
The site was not accessible to the public until 2006
and anyone over the age of 13 can sign up for the first time.
But in those years between the founding of the site and opening up to the public
a lot of big changes were made, and Facebook dropped the definition
from its name after buying the facebook.com domain for $ 200 thousand.
The other major change took place on February 5, 2006, just 20 days before
Facebook opened the world, with the site adding
the first version of the news file.
This changed, it was the first time that Facebook
had become more than just a bunch of profiles and groups.
Another classic feature that
- you might remember
- from the age of
- "Facebook" was the pickpocket button.
On the FAQ page early in 2005
- Facebook said that the focus button was created because
- "we thought it would be fun to create a feature that
- has no specific purpose and see what happens next."
But this pointless feature has proven to be very popular with users
or sending a wave of digital setbacks.
2008 was the year of Facebook's signature developments with
the company launching Facebook Chat, the messaging
service developed into the Messenger version.
In 2009 :
the home page got some cosmetic updates
and started updating the schedule in real time.
In 2010 :
Facebook first obtained a notification tab in the top navigation bar.
In 2011 :
Facebook underwent another overhaul that led to the elimination of
some old features. He added a visual timeline that
allows Facebook users to tell their life story from birth to the present day.
In the past decade or so
Facebook has introduced a number of new features that
have added various functions to the site.
In 2015, Facebook Live (Live) was introduced.
Facebook :
- provided filters in Messenger
- an in-app camera and Facebook stories
- which all appear to have originated with Snapchat.
Most recently :
in 2022 :
Facebook launched its short video service: Reels.
Facebook :
now faces criticism that its algorithm is responsible
for promoting harmful and inflammatory content.
At a U.S. Senate hearing
Facebook's algorithm was accused of promoting child sexual abuse material.
Zuckerberg apologized to families who said their children had been harmed
by the social site, but insisted that the company was doing
its best to protect young users.
