Study:
Climate change drives people to
increase drug and alcohol use!
A team from Columbia University found that climate change
may have contributed to a rise in drug use and alcohol consumption in general.
Researchers have assumed that :
increases in hospital attendance in New York between 1995 and 2014
associated with alcohol consumption, may be driven by people's tendency to
consume more alcohol in hot weather and outdoors, leading to drought.
For other drug use, including cannabis
cocaine
opioids and sedatives
rising temperatures have also increased hospital visits.
We have seen that :
during periods of warming :
- there has been a corresponding increase in hospital visits related to
- alcohol and drug abuse, which also draws attention to some of
said first author Robbie M. Parks.
The Panel used data from 671,625 hospital visits due to
alcohol-related disorders and 721,469 hospital visits over 20 years
compared to the record of daily temperatures and relative humidity.
This allowed them to create a statistical model of high
- and low temperature days
- to understand the impact of short-term
- climatic phenomena such as high heat periods.
Researchers found that the higher the temperatures
the higher the hospital visits as a result of alcohol-related disorders.
The study
states that males constitute
the majority of hospital visits for all reasons.
Public health interventions that broadly target alcohol
and substance disorders in warm weather should be
a public health priority," said Marianthi Anna Keumurtsoglu, senior researcher.
Dr Kyle Merritt :
- who works at Nelson Hospital in British Columbia
- said environmental risks led him to make
- the first clinical diagnosis linked to
climate change after treating a patient with difficulty breathing.
In July, another group of experts from Canada
said climate change was accelerating the rate of blindness.
Drug and alcohol damage
The use of drugs and alcohol is one of the most serious bad habits that
human beings can practise, as they have serious damage to physical
psychological and mental health, as well as social and economic damage.
Drug Damage
Drugs affect the central nervous system
leading to a wide range of symptoms and side effects
including:
Psychiatric disorders:
such as depression, anxiety and schizophrenia.
Mental disorders: such as poor memory, concentration and learning.
Physical disorders:
such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, liver and kidney disease.
Injuries: such as car accidents and injuries related to violence.
Alcohol Damage
Alcohol is a psychedelic that affects the central nervous system
resulting in a wide range of symptoms and side effects
including:
Psychiatric disorders: such as depression, anxiety and schizophrenia.
Physical disorders:
- such as cardiovascular disease
- cancer
- liver and kidney disease.
Injuries:
such as car accidents and injuries related to violence.
Drug and alcohol damage to the community
In addition to health
psychological and mental damage
drug and alcohol use also has negative effects on society
including:
Increased crime rate:
addicts resort to committing crimes to get money to buy drugs or alcohol.
Prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases
addicts tend to have unprotected sex
increasing the risk of sexually transmitted diseases.
Low productivity:
drug and alcohol use results in low productivity at work and school.
How to
prevent drug and alcohol damage
- There are many ways in
- which drug and alcohol damage
- can be prevented
including:
Drug and alcohol risk education: through awareness-raising
and education programmes.
Support for vulnerable people:
such as people with a family history of drug and alcohol use.
Providing treatment for people with addiction:
through addiction treatment centers.
Conclusion :
Drug and alcohol use are bad habits that have serious damage to health and society
so it is important to recognize their risks and ways of preventing them.
