China :

Ready to cooperate with Washington on climate

provided our political demands are respected

China is ready to work with Washington to reduce global warming as long as the latter meets its political demands, Vice President John Kerry said on Wednesday.

China's official Xinhua news agency quoted Vice President Han Zheng as telling Kerry that confronting climate change is an important aspect of Sino-American cooperation, but cooperation is supposed to be based on mutual respect.

He added :

  • The United States must move forward on the basis of
  • the full participation of the United States in
  • key issues of interest to the parties and the exchange of ideas.

Kerry told Chinese Foreign Minister :

  • Wang Yi during his visit this week that
  • President Joe Biden's administration is committed to
  • stabilizing relations between the world's two largest economies

as both sides resume high-level contacts.

Relations between :

the two countries have fallen to

a record low level with disagreements over tariffs, technology access restrictions, a human rights file, China's territorial claims in the South China Sea and Beijing's self-governing threats to Taiwan.

China suspended its cooperation :

with the Biden administration last August in a number of

areas of cooperation :

including climate change

in an expression of outrage following then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.

China regards the island as an integral part of :

its territory and is determined to bring it under its control by force if necessary, which threatens to drag the United States into a major conflict in a region vital to the world economy.

China's climate policy is a set of actions :

and objectives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions

  1. and promoting sustainable development.
  2. China seeks to achieve carbon neutrality
  3. by 2060 and reach peak CO2 emissions by 2030.

China's climate policy :

includes a range of actions, including :

  • Investing in renewable sources of energy, such as solar and wind.
  • Improve energy efficiency.
  • Developing new technologies to reduce emissions.
  • Awareness-raising on climate change.

China faces a number of challenges in achieving its climate goals

including:

  1. Its great reliance on coal.
  2. The size of its population is large.
  3. Its rapid economic growth.

However :

China is committed to achieving its climate goals

and it plays an active role in international climate negotiations.
