Biden claimed that helping Ukraine by sending tanks
start World War III in March, but now he would send them
President Joe Biden told the US public yesterday that the US will send 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. This reflects his position last year when he said that taking this step would help start the "Third World War".
Biden told a House Democrats' caucus in Philadelphia in March 2022: "The idea that we're going to send offensive equipment, planes, tanks, trains with American pilots and American crews - just understand, don't fool yourself
no matter what you say, this is called World War III.
Now Biden changes his tune:
- That's what this is all about
- There is no offensive threat against Russia, and neither is there one.
As we approach one year since Russia's
comprehensive invasion of Ukraine
we remain united and determined as always in our conviction and cause.
These tanks are further evidence of our enduring and unwavering commitment to Ukraine and our confidence in the skill of Ukrainian forces.
Biden somewhat questionably added the hard ball tactics played by Germany when it refused to send Leopard tanks
to Ukraine unless we sent Abrams tanks:
- I am not being forced to change my mind by Germany.
- To be sure that everyone was there, we wanted to check.
- That's what we were going to do all the time.
A senior official said the tanks had been sent to Ukraine after "ongoing diplomatic talks" over the past few weeks with European allies.
President Biden will speak
or speak with Chancellor Schultz several times this month to coordinate on security assistance to Ukraine, including our joint declaration two weeks ago on Patriot missiles and other conditions of assistance," the official said.
According to NBC:
The decision is a reflection of the Biden administration
which has been resisting pressure from Germany to send tanks to Ukraine.
US officials previously insisted that
Biden was not inclined to provide Abrams tanks because members of his national security team, including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Joint Chiefs Chairman General Mark Milley, did not think they would be net positive for tanks.
Ukrainians due to how difficult it is to operate and maintain them.
The idea that
sending tanks to Ukraine would lead to the beginning of
the Third World War is a serious claim
but I have no information to support this assertion.
International relations and the potential for military conflict are complex issues involving multiple factors and actors, and no single event or decision is likely to lead to a global war.

It was important to consult with
experts and reliable sources to gain a better understanding of the situation in Ukraine and the potential risks and consequences of any action taken by the international community.
