Hillary Clinton asks judge to order Donald Trump
to pay $1 million in legal fees for failed lawsuit
Failed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is asking a federal court to order former President Trump to pay her legal fees in a Trump racketeering case against her. The case was filed outside court in September.
Clinton's lawyers wrote:
"A rational lawyer would never have brought this case, let alone continued to prosecute it after multiple defendants' motions for dismissal highlighted its basic and incurable flaws.
The plaintiff's claim was unjustified on the facts
- unsupported by law and placed significant burdens
- on both the accused
- and this Tribunal.
Although many deficiencies in the initial complaint were alerted through one round of dismissal motions, the plaintiff and his lawyers filed a modified complaint that did not fix any of the problems.
Trump's lawyer, Alina Habiba, said:
This proposal, which was appropriately put forward one week before Election Day, is nothing more than a veiled attempt to score political points.
This proposal is particularly inappropriate
- since our client's case will soon be reviewed by the Eleventh Circuit.
- We will oppose this proposal and trust that
- the Court will see through this ploy .
Clinton is requesting $1.06 million from Trump to cover the legal expenses of all the defendants named in his civil lawsuit.
According to the New York Post:
The former president filed the civil lawsuit in March, accusing Clinton, the Democratic National Committee, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan, former British spy Christopher Steele and others of attempting to discredit his 2016 campaign for president by making up evidence of Russian interference.
Trump asserted in statements that rumors of collusion between his presidential campaign and Russia cost him more than $24 million.
U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrokes
appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1997, dismissed the lawsuit in September, citing "deficiencies in the plaintiff's argument."
Trump's lawyer, Alina Habba, accused Clinton of having political reasons to apply for sanctions.
He told The Hill:
"This proposal
appropriately presented one week before Election Day, nothing more than a highly veiled attempt to score political points ".
"This proposal is particularly inappropriate
since our client's case will soon be reviewed by the 11th Circuit.
We will oppose this proposal and trust that the Court will see through this ploy ".
