The US federal authorities accused David Depabi of attempting to kidnap Speaker Nancy Pelosi after he broke into her home last week in San Francisco and assaulted her husband Paul with a hammer.
The U.S.
Attorney's Office and San Francisco District Attorney announced that David Dibaby, 42, was charged with a series of crimes, including assault, attempted murder and attempted kidnapping, after breaking into the Pelosi couple's home in San Francisco last week.

official," according to the U.S. The Northern District of California's attorney general's office. According to an FBI affidavit that was unsealed on Monday, Depabi told police he intended to "hold Nancy Pelosi hostage" when he made this accusation.
The charge of attempted kidnapping carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment.
Depabi was also charged with assaulting a family member of a United States official with intent to retaliate against the official. This charge relates to the assault of Paul Pelosi (Nancy Pelosi's husband), who carries a maximum sentence of 30 years' imprisonment.
Federal charges against Depabi are in addition to state charges
- which later included "attempted murder," according to the San Francisco district attorney
- burglary of homes, assault with a deadly weapon
- and abuse of older persons
- as well as threats to a public servant and his family."
For her part
Speaker Nancy Pelosi said after official and federal charges against the man who attacked her husband that Paul Pelosi was "making steady progress and the recovery process will be prolonged."

US authorities reported that the accused of attacking Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband Paul Pelosi told police he wanted to hold the Speaker hostage "and break her knees."
According to a federal statement filed with the court today
David Depabi assaulted (42), Paul Pelosi who was sleeping in the couple's bedroom in San Francisco early last Friday morning, where federal prosecutors indicted Depabi, days after police said he broke into Pelosi's home and hit the Democratic leader's eighty-two-year-old husband with a hammer on his head.
Dibaby has been charged with assaulting
- disabling or retaliating against a federal official
- by endangering or harming a family member
- and faces one count of attempting to kidnap
- an American official for carrying out his official duties.
The announcement of
the federal charges comes as it was decided that San Francisco prosecutor Brooke Jenkins would announce the state's criminal charges against Depabi, rejecting conspiracy theories that emerged after the attack, asserting that the attacker was targeting the Democratic leader when he broke into the couple's home and found only Paul Pelosi.

Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas called the attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi "a terrifying attack that has no place in the country."
The Minister told CNN, "This has no place in our country."
commenting on the incident, adding that it is difficult to do justice to the attack as "domestic terrorism" because of the legal consequences of the term.
I intend to let the legal system play out in court while the local authorities investigate the situation and take appropriate action.
Domestic terrorism was considered "one of the greatest threats related to terrorism" to the security of the United States.
A man broke into Speaker Nancy Pelosi's house
assaulting her husband, while the speaker was not present at the time of the attack.
The man who carried out the attack was later found to be a proponent of conspiracy theories.
