Former US President Donald Trump erred during a ceremony attended by members of Congress in 2017, mistakenly considering some of their ethnic minority aides as service staff and asking them to bring him a sandwich.

According to a report published by Rolling Stone, Trump thought some ethnically diverse Democratic Party staffers were waiters, asking them, according to New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman's book Confidence Man.

Then-White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus was quick to correct Trump's mistake

telling him that he had just addressed senior congressional aides before going to find the actual White House service staff.

In a 2017 interview, Trump expressed surprise that players Serena and Venus Williams were able to attract a racially diverse audience, as he thought black people were not interested in tennis.

Trump's history of racist statements and actions has led some to conclude that even his vague statements hide bigotry.

  • During his time in office
  • Trump told visitors that he had a "secret bathroom"
  • saying that the toilet had been completely redesigned, according to the book.

But the staff at the time lied to him, pointing out that only toilet seats had been changed, according to custom in presidential transfers.

Haberman wrote that Trump's remark that he did not want to use the same bathroom as his black predecessor Barack Obama was interpreted.
