Why can't Griezmann play more than 27 minutes per game this season? France's Antoine Griezmann has been captive for Atletico Madrid, with his role limited to minute crumbs since the start of the season and expects to be irrelevant when his side play Porto tomorrow in the Champions League. "Grezo" appears to be stuck between Barcelona, with which his contract runs until 2024, and the capital club Madrid, which has been loaned to its ranks for a second successive season, in relation to his contract clauses.

According to the Spanish press

the option to buy Griezmann by Atletico Madrid of 40 million euros will be activated automatically if the French international striker plays more than 45 minutes in 50% (or more) of the club's games during the current season.

In order not to give effect to this option, Atletico coach Diego Simeone of Argentina decided, at the request of management, to limit the French international striker's minutes (108 caps, 42 goals) to only 27 minutes of parole per match, to avoid forcing his club to pay Griezmann's purchase price.

Although his role in the substitute dress was limited

the 2018 World Champion of

Russia proved his scoring effectiveness during his four La Liga games this season

  • scoring two goals, the first in the 3-0 win over Getafe at the start of La Lega
  • and then the 1-0 win over Valencia two minutes after he went down in reserve in the 64th minute.
  • However, at the age of 31, Griezmann must again play a substitute against Portuguese
  • side Porto on Wednesday in the first round of the Champions League.

Atletico, after a modest start in the league (two victories, a draw and a defeat), still needed Grazo's efforts to break out of the trap of the Portuguese side he had faced twice last season in the same role as the parent continental competition (a draw and win for Atletico).

Last season, in the den of the Portuguese club, Griezmann scored a goal and passed a decisive ball during the Atletico's 3-1 win, giving the Spanish club a crossing card from the group stage in the sixth and final round.
