US commemorates September 11 attacks
Americans celebrated the 21st anniversary of the September 11 attacks
with President Joe Biden visiting the Pentagon, and New Yorkers commemorating about 3,000 people killed in the terrorist attack.
Victims' relatives, police, firefighters and city officials gathered at the 9/11 National Memorial and Museum in the southern part of Manhattan, where the names of the dead were read as they had done every year since the deadliest attack in the United States in its history.
The bells rang as participants observed a minute's silence at 2 hours (12:46 and 13:03 TG)
- the exact dates on which the passenger plane struck the North and South Trade Center towers.
- Biden celebrated the anniversary at the Pentagon
- where base hijackers rammed an aircraft into the huge building where
- the Defense Department is located.
The president approached the wreath outside the building and placed his hand on his heart.
"After 21 years, we preserve the memory of all the precious lives stolen from us at Ground Zero, at Shanksville in Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon," he tweeted shortly before.
Al-Qaida hijacked four aircraft in total. The third hit the Pentagon and the fourth was shot down by passengers in a field in Pennsylvania.
Attendees at the New York ceremony included Vice President Kamala Harris
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and City Mayor Eric Adams. Relatives hugged each other and laid flowers on the memorial holding signs or wearing T-shirts bearing the victims' photographs
Messages of sympathy and support from outside the country, including from NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who described 11 September as "one of the most tragic days for the United States and the world.
"In a time of daily missile attacks :
Ukraine knows well terrorism and sincerely sympathizes with the American people," Zelensky said in a tweet, referring to the Russian invasion of his country, which claimed thousands.
On Saturday evening, New York skies were lit with two beams in blue symbolizing the two towers of the Trade Centre.
