Former US President Donald Trump announced that he refused to answer questions during the civil investigation in New York. What questions did he refuse to answer and the only question he answered?

Sources told nbc news that Trump invoked the Fifth Amendment while appearing under oath before New York Attorney General Letitia James who investigates a supposed fraud in his family's business practices, more than 440 times.

Trump's lawyer, Ronald Fishti, told the network that the only question the former president answered about his name, after which he used the Fifth Amendment in every question he asked, noting that Kevin Wallace, a lawyer in James' office, asked Trump about valuations of various real estate assets, including golf clubs, his signature of documents related to mortgages and loans, and the size of his apartment.

He described the general atmosphere of the room where Trump gave his statement as "polite and unsteady."

  • Trump's refusal to answer questions is a legal step guaranteed by the US Constitution in what is known as the 5th Amendment
  • the Fifth Amendment that protects the individual from "self-incrimination."
  • But this move could prejudice the former President's chances of winning against James in any civil action she initiates in connection with her investigation.

In 2016, Trump considered that persons using the Fifth Amendment when questioned were "guilty", but in a statement released after his investigation concluded yesterday, he justified his previous statement: "I once asked if I was innocent, why are you using the Fifth Amendment? Now I know the answer to this question ".

Former US President Donald Trump announced that he refused to answer questions while appearing under oath before the New York Attorney General investigating a presumed fraud in his family's business practices.

Trump said in a statement that he had used his right to the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and refused to answer questions while testifying at the civil inquiry in New York.

  • When your family, your company and all the people in your department become the targets of a false and politically motivated campaign of
  • persecution with the support of lawyers
  • prosecutors and misleading mediayou have no choice."

He continued:

"If there's any question in my mind, the FBI storming my house

on Monday, just two days before this filing. any uncertainty has been surveyed ".

The Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution establishes a number of rights relating to criminal and civil legal proceedings. In criminal cases, the Fifth Amendment guarantees the right to a grand jury and protects the individual against self-incrimination.

Since March 2019, lawyers for New York Attorney General Letitia James have examined whether Trump and his company exaggerated the value of his hotels and golf clubs, as well as other assets.

Earlier this year, James said in a lawsuit that Trump's business practices were "fraudulent or misleading", stressing that her office needed to question Trump and two of his sons to determine responsibility for the conduct.

Because James Madani's investigation, she could sue Trump but not bring criminal charges against him.
