U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) used the argument that same-sex couples can only have children by adopting lesbian women who have been raped to oppose the right to abortion.
He also said that he was "concerned" if LGBTQ organizations turned into "pro-abortion" because "fewer same-sex couples" would be able to have children.
The troubled Florida Republican, who appears to be being investigated for trafficking in the sex of minors, also showed a lack of understanding of the definition of "bisexual", wrongly assuming that bisexual women do not enter or support single-sex relationships or marriages.
On Thursday, Gaetz opposed the legal director of the Human Rights Campaign who was speaking in favor of the right to abortion during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on "Privacy and Civil Rights in Post-Roe America."
Gaetz tried to confuse the right to abortion and adoption while omitting the fact that there are a large number of children - more than 400,000 in custody and 117,000 pending adoption.
- We have tens of thousands of same-sex couples raising families and raising children
- as a result of adoption - tens of thousands, we know that as a result of census data,
- Gaetz told Human Rights Council lawyer Sarah Warbello
"Are there any data that you can indicate that lesbian women are more likely to experience unwanted pregnancies as a result of rape than to start a family by adopting a same-sex couple?"
Gaetz insisted and redrafted his question after not receiving the requested reply.
"May you admit that surely more than that, in America you are more likely to have same-sex couples adopting than unwanted pregnancy lesbians as a result of sexual assault? right? "
"I'm not asking this to be dismissive, but are you saying that lesbian women are also capable of being men?" Gates asked.
"That's not what I said. Warplow responded.
"Yes, but my question about lesbians - same-sex couples, right? As I care deeply about this issue with the support of the Human Rights Campaign, I sponsored legislation to eliminate the legal ban on gay adoption in Florida. I felt like this was very intolerant, and I think families know love more than blood, "Gaetz offered.
"I am concerned that if the LGBTQ community and if advocacy organizations for same-sex couples have somehow reoriented it into a pro-abortion institution," the Florida Republican claimed, "it could actually lead to fewer same-sex couples with access to the nurturing family that gives them a full life. Are you worried about that? "
Warplow replied:
"My concern is to force women to conceive just to satisfy the other couple's desire to have a baby.
- There are many ways to form a family. Many same-sex couples use fertility treatments and assisted reproduction techniques in addition to adoption. Indeed
- LGBTQ people are more likely to adopt children most in need. "
- Compared to heterosexual couples
- Gaetz stated that "same-sex couples are three times more likely" to adopt children.
"That's why it's amazing to me that people who claim to be defending gay Americans would say that what we need is abortion on demand because it's these people who are involved in these adoptions and it's probably not really about the benefit of gay couples. Maybe it's about money, "apparently trying to discredit the Human Rights Council.
