Musk: I will lift the ban on Trump on Twitter after the deal is done

US billionaire Elon Musk said he would lift the ban on former US President Donald Trump's Twitter accounts, after completing a deal to buy the site for US $44 billion. In an interview with the Financial Times, Musk said the ban on Trump was a "moral and stupid mistake." "I think it was not right to ban Trump and I think it was wrong, it alienated a large part of the country and ultimately did not result in the lack of a voice for the former president," he added, noting that "this decision did not silence Trump, but rather amplified his views among people on the political right."

Musk's statement came after Trump earlier announced that he would not return to Twitter even if Musk reactivated his account, which was suspended after supporters broke into the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Twitter considered a number of its tweets linked to violent protests "inflammatory", warning of "a risk of the account being used to incite further violence."
